Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) is a minimally invasive procedure used to insert a feeding tube directly into the stomach through the abdominal wall. It is performed using an endoscope (a flexible camera) to guide the placement of the tube, allowing for long-term nutritional support in patients who cannot eat or swallow safely.

PEG feeding is essential for individuals with conditions affecting swallowing, neurological disorders, stroke, head and neck cancer, or severe malnutrition. The procedure ensures proper nutrition and hydration, improving overall health and quality of life.

When is PEG Recommended?

PEG is recommended for individuals who cannot consume enough nutrients orally due to neurological conditions, cancers, or severe swallowing difficulties (dysphagia). It is also necessary for patients requiring long-term enteral nutrition who cannot maintain adequate caloric intake through traditional feeding methods.

This procedure is commonly performed for stroke patients, individuals with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), Parkinson’s disease, or head and neck cancers. It is also beneficial for those recovering from major surgeries or prolonged illnesses that impair normal digestion.

Procedure Details

PEG placement is a quick and safe procedure performed under mild sedation to ensure patient comfort.

A local anesthetic and sedation are administered.

An endoscope is inserted through the mouth into the stomach to visualize the placement site.

A small incision is made in the abdominal wall, and a feeding tube is inserted.

The tube is secured inside the stomach, allowing direct feeding access.

The endoscope is removed, and the patient is monitored before discharge.
